Trillium Woods Scholarship Committee Gives Back to Their Community
Residents of the Plymouth life plan community, Trillium Woods, are encouraged to give back in many ways. Opportunities can present themselves through in-kind donations or volunteering hours of their time. Residents are happy to lend their services in any way they can, especially when it involves giving back to the dedicated staff of Trillium Woods.
In 2019, a task force was established to create a committee that would award scholarships. For the past two years, this unique program has given Trillium Woods employees and their children financial aid to help pay for school-related expenses. Money for these scholarships is generously donated by the residents of Trillium Woods.
The committee partners with Scholarship America, a Minnesota-based organization that assists communities, corporations, foundations, and individuals with fundraising, managing, and awarding scholarships to students. “We thought it best to partner with a local philanthropic business, that way, we could ensure the scholarships were awarded to those who need them most,” says Kenneth Barrera, resident, and member of the Scholarship Committee.
Since establishing this committee, one scholarship of $5,000 was awarded for the 2021-2022 school year. For the 2022-2023 school year, the committee saw an increase in applications and awarded nearly $20,000 in scholarships to staff and their children.
As committee members work through this system, they hope to make the application process more accessible. Barrera adds, “We want to help as many people as possible by making the process more streamlined. We would like to open this up to many more.”
