Still Sweeping Strong: Trillium Woods Resident Returns to the Rink at 87
Fresh off National Curling Day, a trailblazing 87-year-old former national curling champion returned to the ice with her team on Tuesday, November 18 at Fogerty Arena in Blaine. A lifelong athlete who continued to compete, Myrna MacKinnon was a member of the U.S. Women’s Curling Association’s 1983 Championship Team — then considered the apex of women’s curling in the U.S., when curling had not yet become an Olympic sport.
Growing up in Nova Scotia, Myrna started a girls’ curling team at her high school after spending hours watching her dad’s team, despite early skepticism from her school principal. She proved herself to be a force to be reckoned with (see attached photo) and offered an engaging interview and great visuals as she shared the dynamics of the sport she calls “agility, skill and strategy — chess on ice!” Since moving to Trillium Woods senior living, she has embraced the community’s strong focus on personal and group fitness. Myrna also shared her techniques, tricks and strategies — proof that passion for the sport carries on at any age.
