Trillium Woods Kicked Off Senior Games with an Olympic-Style Opening Ceremony
Our residents fought off the cold by celebrating the Olympics at Trillium Woods.
Residents, team members and guests gathered for an Olympic-style Opening Ceremony as eight teams and 70 resident-athletes began their own Senior Games. The event featured a Parade of Nations and lighting of the torch as the games began.
Representing Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan and Switzerland, athletes entered the auditorium in uniform and carried their flags with pride as they prepared for a week of friendly competition. Throughout the week, residents competed for medals and celebrated wins on a tri-level podium.
We were honored to welcome featured speaker Carrie Anne Tollefson, who represented the United States at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. She advanced to the semifinals as an elite middle-distance runner and later went on to broadcast for ESPN, NBC and USATF.tv. During her visit, she shared stories from her Olympic experience and offered advice on staying active as we age.
Among our own residents is 87-year-old Myrna MacKinnon, who was a member of the winning U.S. Women’s Curling Association’s 1983 Championship Team — the highest level of women’s curling in the U.S. at the time, before the sport became part of the Olympic Games.
The Opening Ceremony marked an exciting start to a week of competition, camaraderie and Olympic spirit at Trillium Woods.
