Trillium Woods’ Fitness Program Supports Everyday Health and Happiness

For the vibrant seniors at Trillium Woods in Plymouth, MN, a commitment to physical fitness and overall wellness is not a January resolution or a passing trend. It’s woven into daily life year-round and grounded in evidence-based programming, resident feedback, and the truth that movement supports independence, confidence, and joy at every age.

Whether they are enjoying the campus’s many fitness-enhancing amenities on their own, or choosing a favorite exercise class from the many offered, it’s easy for residents of the senior living community to stay active.

The state-of-the-art on-site fitness center is perfect for strength and cardio workouts, while the indoor pool supports low-impact conditioning and hosts popular aquatic classes. The community’s walking and hiking trails encourage fresh-air movement, and there are also outdoor options like a pickleball court for social fitness.

These amenities pair naturally with Trillium Woods’ active-lifestyle programming and group classes, giving residents multiple ways to build strength, balance, and endurance — whether they prefer independent workouts, instructor-led sessions, or simply getting their steps in by walking around the beautiful campus.

And for those who need a little extra encouragement (or who love a challenge), Fitness Program Manager Sam Lefaive and its Registered Dietitian Morgan Belgarde lead fun and informative wellness initiatives throughout the year.

Fitness Superpowers for Active Aging

The cornerstone of Trillium Woods’ 2026 fitness strategy is the Fitness Superpowers program, a year-long initiative that breaks movement into six essential “superpowers” for active aging: posture, flexibility, reflexes, strength, balance, and grip strength. Each superpower receives two dedicated months of focus, complete with optional challenges, supervised gym time, and pre- and post-assessments that allow residents to see tangible progress.

Posture kicks off the program in January, addressing one of residents’ most common concerns. As Lefaive explains, posture affects far more than appearance. It influences pain levels, breathing, sleep quality, digestion, balance, and long-term mobility. By strengthening the muscles that support the spine and encouraging awareness throughout the day, residents learn that meaningful improvement comes from consistent, manageable changes rather than quick fixes.

Other superpowers target everyday function in equally practical ways. Grip strength supports tasks like opening jars, carrying groceries, and adjusting fitness equipment. Balance and reflex training help reduce fall risk. Flexibility improves range of motion and comfort during daily activities. Each area reinforces the idea that fitness at Trillium Woods is ultimately about living well.

Community Energy and Friendly Competition

Fitness at Trillium Woods is also social, spirited, and fun. From February 6 to February 13, the community will host its annual Winter Games, an in-house Olympic-style competition where eight resident teams represent different countries across six events, including Chair Volleyball, Snowball Slalom, Floor Hockey Shooting, and Single-Leg Balance. Regular fitness classes are paused during the week to encourage participation and cheering.

Seasonal highlights continue throughout the year, including a day-long and community-wide Pump It for Parkinson’s challenge in the spring, a mini-golf competition in April, summer outdoor clubs, and a fall Empowerment Workshop focused on safely getting up and down from the ground. This workshop reframes fall prevention as confidence-building, helping residents assess their abilities, practice movement strategies, and understand when staying calm and asking for help is the safest choice.

Nutrition as a Partner to Movement

Physical wellness at Trillium Woods extends beyond the fitness center. Nutrition plays a central role, guided by Belgarde’s resident-driven approach. “In 2026, I plan to do a nutrition challenge ranging from 7 days to 30 days every 3 or 4 months,” she says, creating opportunities for residents to build habits gradually and sustainably. Monthly wellness prompts and challenges encourage mindful eating, hydration, movement, and reflection, reinforcing that nourishment supports energy, strength, and recovery.

Wellness in Full Context

Physical fitness is only one aspect of the community’s focus on resident health and happiness. Trillium Woods’ comprehensive and holistic 8 Dimensions of Wellness program fosters emotional, physical, intellectual, vocational, spiritual, social, and environmental wellness through ample classes, clubs, events, parties, lectures, trips, performances, and volunteering opportunities. Residents benefit from health services, Trillium Woods’ final dimension of wellness, by taking advantage of the community’s in-house health resources.

In addition to supporting physical wellness, fitness offerings at Trillium Woods also promote mind-body-spirit wellness in other ways. Fitness classes double as social gatherings and a chance boost brain health, as participants exercise their memories and focus along with their bodies. Meditation classes allow for spiritual centering. Physical activity gives your mood and confidence a lift, too.

At Trillium Woods, physical fitness is never about checking a box; It’s about creating the strength, confidence, and momentum to fully enjoy each day, while helping you stay engaged, capable, and connected for years to come.
